BOSS 3000 Sanitary-grade Sewer Retention

Owner: Société de transport de Montréal
Engineer: Cima+
Contractor: Construction Arcade
Location: Montreal, QC

When modifications were to be made to the underground infrastructure below a maintenance facility owned by Société de transport de Montréal on Stinson Street, one of the environmental regulations imposed on the site by the City of Montreal, was a requirement to retain a certain amount of stormwater before it was to be released back into the City’s waste water network.

Designed with steel reinforced polyethylene pipe (SRPE), the retention tank would offer the back flow needed for the sanitary system and two smaller Poly-tite (watertight) pipes, which would act as vents. Due to the sanitary waste water management nature of the system, an essential component of the SRPE pipe was water tightness.

With a very narrow product specification in hand, the contractor on the project, Construction Arcade, quickly learned that there was a single solution that would meet all of the City’s requirements – including the corrosion-resistance to gases and acids present in sanitary sewer systems.

Both watertight and of santitary-grade, BOSS 3000™ is the only large-diameter SRPE pipe of its kind. Its smooth interior wall ensures optimal hydraulics, and the bell and gasket joining system meets watertight sewer pipe requirements as per the CSA standard requirements. BOSS 3000™ pipe is CSA certified and its minimum stiffness of 320 kPa has also been validated by CSA.

The field-proven bell and spigot assembly method made life easier on the contractor so they could focus on the complexities of the depth and width restrictions in which they were working under. The shallow height cover meant that a 320 kPa pipe stiffness was that much more vital to the long-term integrity of the pipe. Being a steel-reinforced HDPE, the shape and deflection of BOSS 3000 is easier to control, even at a larger pipe diameter of 1500mm. The reduced weight of the pipe also meant that there was no heavy equipment machinery on site. This was additional value offered by BOSS 3000 and ended up providing the contractor with extra room within the tight footprint of the site.
