Armtec Provides Alternative Solution to Storm Sewer Tender
Owner:Town of Springdale
Engineer:SNC Lavalin
Contractor:Budgell's Equipment
Location:Springdale, NL
Product Utilized: UltraFlo Corrugated Steel Pipe
The Challenge
The original project included 590m of 1,050mm diameter HDPE pipe to be used as a main storm sewer line through the Town of Springdale. Armtec however did not have adequate stock of 1,050mm diameter HPDE pipe at the nearby Bishop’s Falls facility. Given the large quantity and the time of year, 13 truckloads of pipe would have needed to be shipped in from another location, significantly adding to the overall project cost.
The Solution
Realizing that providing the HDPE solution was not an option for Armtec, the consultant on this project was called to see if UltraFlo Storm Sewer Pipe could be used as an alternate. After providing additional information and specifications, an addendum was issued that UltraFlo would be accepted as an alternative to the 1,050mm diameter HDPE. Another important factor in this decision was that the UltraFlo Storm Pipe would be manufactured in Newfoundland rather than the HDPE pipe which would need to be manufactured outside of the province, regardless of who provided the HDPE. Shortly after the addendum was issued, Armtec prepared the quotation and submitted it to the contractor bidding the project. Budgell’s Equipment, located in the Town of Springdale was the successful bidder. Armtec then immediately entered into negotiations for the project. The following day, the order for the UltraFlo was placed. Working with the consultant to better understand the options available in storm sewer applications and the benefits of UltraFlo, along with the ability to quickly manufacture the product allowed Armtec to secure this project and ship the materials to the job-site on time and within budget.
